Marshmallow Sofa - A Landmark In Furniture Designs

George Nelson and Irving Harper designed Marshmallow Sofa in the year 1956. The design of the sofa appeared to be very much playful and liked by people who craved for something new. Soon it became a landmark in the area of modern furniture designing. People turn their head once more to have a glance of the sofa and give a smile. George Nelson has also designed the Nelson Bench, bearing his name, which has gained much popularity for outdoor use amongst contemporary furniture.

Today the Marshmallow sofa is very popular sofa because it broke the conventional trends of furniture designs and innovated a new idea in furniture designing. The atom like round upholstered cushions, 18 of them, each 12 inches in diameter, 9 set together to form the sitting cushions and 9 set as backrest. These cushions are attached to a black enameled steel frame forming the legs of the sofa. The name, marshmallow, of this sofa is given by Nelson for the appearance of the round cushions, which are like giant marshmallows. The upholstery of the cushions is neatly done. These sofas are available in multi-colored or monochrome cushions. The cushions can be detached for easy cleaning. 

These cushions are made of various fabrics like pure leather and other synthetic leathers. This piece of modern furniture has been reproduced and sold through various outlets in varied designs and colors. The price to varies between manufactures too.
